Historically, one of the problems with buying a used car was that you would not get the same level of warranty protection as with a new car. Many dealers do offer “service contracts” or “extended warranties” on used cars, but these are often expensive. Also, these products are actually a form of insurance, and are offered by insurance companies – not all of whom are reputable.
Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles
There are two good options to get a more reliable warranty. The first is to buy a CPO – Certified Pre-Owned car. These are sold by dealers who sell the same make new, and are covered by a warranty provided by the manufacturer. You have the peace of mind of knowing that a qualified mechanic has given the car a full looking over to make sure it’s a “good risk” for their warranty, and that they have done all of the necessary repairs and maintenance before putting the vehicle on the lot.
If a dealer tries to say they can certify a car after you buy it, or that they can certify a car by a manufacturer from whom they do not sell new cars, walk away – they are probably just trying to sell you an extended warranty.
The second option is to get the factory warranty transferred. If you are buying a car that is less than three years old (based off purchase date), then the warranty can easily be transferred.
A few companies offer longer warranties, but the standard is 3 years and 36,000 miles. The warranty is tracked by the vehicle identification number (VIN), so you should call a dealer and find out how much warranty is left before purchasing the car.
If you can’t find the VIN, the dealer may still be able to help you, and if you are buying from a dealer they should already have that information. One exception is Hyundai and Kia, who will not transfer their 10 year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty (the best in the industry) to a new owner, instead dropping the coverage to 5 years or 60,000 miles. In most cases, though, used cars come with whatever factory warranty may remain.
If the factory warranty has expired, you may still be able to get a good deal on an aftermarket warranty from a reputable company, but always check their history.
